Mucormycosis during the second wave of COVID-19 in India

<p><strong>Background:</strong> The so called “black fungus epidemic” struck India during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Large numbers patients were being reported, posing a challenging situation for clinicians. treatment options limited, and rescue surgery was mutilating, anti-fungal medicines became short supply soon, prognosis remained poor. Objective to understand unifying pathophysiological picture with framework check this post Covid epidemic, especially in context South-east-Asia. </p><p><strong>Methods</strong>: clinical, radiological, surgical data presented symptoms rhino-orbito-cerebral complications, collected analyzed.</p><p><strong>Results</strong>: 80.9% operated patient had thrombosis identifiable major vessels. 76.7% cerebral venous thrombosis. 30% internal carotid artery narrowing on imaging. Fungal staining positive 72% patient. We found level D dimer high 81.3% 83.9% blood sugar raised at time presentation.</p><p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: Hyper thrombotic state diabetes injudicious use steroids predisposed susceptible thromboembolic phenomena, leading necrosis tissue secondary fungal infection.</p>
